National Certificate 2 in Electrotechnology Servicing

The programme is part of thePNG National Training Package in Electrotechnology. It is offered in face-to-face mode, for a duration of one (1) year. A total of 200 credit points is required to complete this programme at level 2 of the PNG National Qualification Framework.

Outcomes

The programme will prepare learners for direct employment in the ICT Industry, and further training qualification within the PNG‟s Electrotechnology Training Package.

National Certificate 1

COM1 01 07 – Basic Computing (40 hours)

This module will provide students the basic knowledge and skills in computing required for entry into the Electrotechnology industry.

Pre-requisite : Nil

DWG1 01 07 – Drawing Interpretation and Sketching (40 hours)

This module will provide students the knowledge and skills required to interpret engineering drawing and produce detailed freehand sketches of components parts and +–+++complete objects associated with the Electrotechnology industry.

ELE1 01 07 – Electrical Fundamentals (40 hours)

This module will enable students to understand the basic electrical principles and concepts, the effects of current flow and the various sources of electromotive force.

ELE1 02 07 – Basic Electrical Circuits (40 hours)

This module will enable students to carry out calculations relative to Ohms’Law, power, work and energy for series and parallel circuits; determine relationships between voltage, current, resistance, power and work in both simple resistive loads and simple voltage sources in series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits; and to connect and make measurements in circuits of that kind and apply knowledge of series-parallel circuits to make a battery for a specific purpose from a group of uniform cells.

MAT1 01 07 – Mathematics for Electrotechnology 1 (40 hours)

This module will provide students the knowledge and skills to use mathematics in solving simple problems in Electrotechnology.

A student who successfully completes this module will be able to multiply, divide, subtract and add whole numbers, decimals and fractions. The student will also be able to estimate answers, perform calculations involving percentages and proportions, and use charts and graphs to determine information.

MWP1 01 07 – Mechanical Workshop Practice (40 hours)

This module will enable students to measure/ mark out materials, cut and shape materials, use power tools and fasteners and install fixtures, fittings and accessories.

OHS1 01 07 – Occupational Health and Safety (40 hours)

This module will introduce the student to safe procedures for personnel working in an Electrotechnology environment.

PCS1 01 07 – Parts and Components Selection (40 hours)

This module will enable learners to identify parts and components, to obtain information about parts and components, ordering/receiving and dispatching procedures for parts and components.

WOS1 01 07 – Work Oriented Studies (40 hours)

This module will provide students information on the various Electrotechnology vocations, their career paths and how training will take place. It also introduces the student to regulations, policies and practices used in the Electrotechnology industry to ensure workers safety and well being.

WPC1 01 07 – Workplace Communications (40 hours)

This module will enable students to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in their vocational area.

HIV1 01 07 – Prevention of Aids/HIV and STD (40 hours)

This module consists of four (4) compulsory sub-modules intended to protect young men and women from contracting HIV/AIDS and STI’s. These are:

 Basic Knowledge of HID/AIDS & STIs – 10 hours
 Protecting Yourself and Others – 10 hours
 Care and Support for People Living with HIV/AIDS – 10 hours
 Sexuality, Sex and Responsible Living – 10 hours

The modules will provide opportunity for students to learn practical life skills and give them the chance to discuss , debate, role play and explore the issues around sexuality, relationships, reproduction and sexual health.

BO 201 07 – Business Operations (40 hours)

This module will provide students the basic knowledge and skils in operating a small business.

MAT 201 07 – Mathematics for Electrotechnology 2 (40 hours)

This module will develop the students knowledge and skills to use calculations as a tool of trade to solve advanced Electrotechnology problems.

Pre-requisite : MAT 101 07

ELE 201 07 – Safety in the Electrical Workplace (20 hours)

This module will enable students to work in an electrical workplace in a manner that is safe to themselves and their co-workers.

Pre-requisite : Nil

ELE 213 07 – Electrical Workshop Practice ‘B’ (80 hours)

This module will enable students to install and terminate electrical cords and cables and conduct test on electrical circuits.

ELE 202 07 – Test Equipment (40 hours)

This module will provide students the skills to select and use electrical/electronic test equipment.

Pre-requisite : ELE 201 07

COM 201 07 – Introduction to Application Software (40 hours)

This module will provide students the knowledge and skills to perform basic computer operation utilizing common operating systems and application software.

COM 202 07 – Computer Peripherals (40 hours)

This module will provide students the knowledge and skills on the basic concepts of a number of computer peripheral devices.

ELR 202 07 – Digital Fundamentals (60 hours)

This module will enable students to distinguish between analog and digital systems, describe number systems and predict the outputs of simple combinational circuits constructed using discrete logic gates.

ELR 207 07 – Basic PC Testing & Modification (40 hours)

This module will introduce students with non-electronics background to the concepts of digital electronics and the procedures and practices used in the testing and replacement of boards in Personal Computer system.

ELR 208 07 – Operational Concepts of Business Machines (40 hours)

This module will provide students with an overview of the operation of office machines, the knowledge and skills to perform routine maintenance, and handle consumables safely.

ELR 209 07 – Electromechanics of Business Machines (40 hours)

This module will provide students with the knowledge of the operational principles, applications and maintenance requirements of the mechanical and electro-mechanical components of business machines.

WP 201 07 – Work Placement (240 hours)

This module will provide students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in the institution environment to actual situations generally expected in the workplace.

Pre-requisite : Students must have completed the required preparatory modules in his/her trade area.
